SEXUAL abuse victims in Melbourne have been receiving misleading letters from the Catholic Church saying that if they accept compensation they can never take further action for any other cases of abuse.

The standard letter sent with legal offers of compensation, says that signing the offer ''releases the Archbishop from all further claims arising out of the sexual abuse or any other sexual abuse by a priest, religious or lay person under the control of the Archbishop of Melbourne''.

In 1963-1970 Christian Brother William Stuart Houston worked at St Augustine's orphanage, Geelong, Victoria. In June 1997 he appeared in the Geelong Magistrates Court, charged with committing 14 sexual offences against a boy at St Augustine's in the 1960s. At the time of this court case, Houston was listed as living at a Christian Brothers residential address in Melbourne.

The Dublin Diocese inquiry findings will probably be published on Thursday next, 26th November, but they have already been leaked to the press.

If reports are correct, the inquiry will say that the four Archbishops who controlled the diocese before Diarmuid Martin cared little or nothing for the suffering of children raped by their priests.

THE High Court will give its final ruling next week on exactly how much may be published of the report of the investigation into the handling by Catholic Church and state authorities of child sex abuse allegations against Dublin clerics.

It followed the hearing yesterday by Mr Justice Paul Gilligan of an issue that had not been raised with him when he directed that most of the report could be published.

Last week Raymond Lahey, bishop of Antigonish parish in Nova Scotia, was charged with possession of child pornography after airport officials found images on his laptop computer. Yet another shepard of the Catholic Church caught with his pants down. Once again, children are the victims. It is time for the Canadian government to intervene.

That was the message of Archbishop Robert Carlson at a July 30 press conference at the Catholic Center, called shortly after the archbishop was informed of the arrest of an archdiocesan priest for recruiting a minor for sex.

On July 30 Father James P. Grady, pastor of St. Raphael the Archangel Parish in St. Louis Hills, was charged federally with recruiting a minor for a commercial sex act. Father Grady was arrested the evening of July 29 in an undercover operation by FBI agents and local law enforcement officers.

GARDAI investigating allegations against clerical child abusers are now pursuing almost 100 fresh complaints.

The new lines of inquiry emerged from the telephone "hotline" set up by gardai in the wake of the publication of the Ryan report in May.

The breakthrough in the garda study of the Ryan findings was revealed last night as Justice Minister Dermot Ahern received a copy of the report on child abuse in the Dublin Archdiocese.

Due to a recent funding cut we are no longer able to provide the same level of service as was previously possible. Whilst some counselling, advocacy and education programs continue to be funded by the Qld State Government, other services are no longer supported. This will directly impact our ability to assist adult survivors and our ability to continue much of our child sexual assault prevention and early intervention programs.

As a result, unavoidable delays will be experienced in some areas and in some cases, we may be unable to assist at all. We find this situation as distressing as you do.

Rest assured however, that the staff, management and supporters of Bravehearts will not give up on the children and adults who rely on us. We are working with unbridled determination to fill this funding gap.
