I recently watched Amy Berg’s 2006 documentary focusing on former-Fr. Oliver O’Grady, one of the most notorious of sexual abusers. It has serious flaws: like many contemporary documentaries, it presents points of view or conclusions as though they were fact.

In this instance, there are logical leaps I’m not willing to take, and some misconceptions about how sex abuse cases were handled (and by what rules) at various points in time.

This journalism angle seems a fascinating way to approach the topic. But the continuing revelations, this time in Europe, about child sex abuse within the Catholic Church are so grave and devastating, such a fearful human crime and human tragedy, that I want to say, right up front, I would not be asking you to read a blog post about this subject unless I thought that the movie I was going to recommend in connection with it was, by any standard, essential viewing.

Painful, painful to read this book. Pain for the victims of sexual abuse, pain for the abusers, pain for the church, and pain for Nova Scotian Duncan MacAskill, the �bishop�s man� commissioned to facilitate the discreet transfer of offending priests.

Authors Jason Berry (Lead Us Not into Temptation) and Gerald Renner (retired reporter for the Hartford Courant) team up for this highly accusatory report on the sex abuse scandal within the Catholic Church.

The "vows of silence" speak to the Church's self-protective secrecy that made it possible to ignore the rampant abuse, despite all the early accusations and red flags. To reveal the history and scope of this problem, Berry and Renner expertly researched the parallel lives of two key players.

The first one is Thomas Doyle, portrayed as an American hero priest. Doyle first heard about priests sexually abusing children in the early 1980s. Doyle immediately started to confront his superiors and blow the whistle at every turn.

�It was like working in a factory,� Spade said. �And in this factory was a conveyor belt of damaged people. Every day it was another damaged person.
