I was sickened and saddened when I came across a website with information regarding a church where I knew of some of the people in the congregation in the past. It had been years since I had taken a deeper look at this particular church and had a very strong check in my heart as to whether not so good things were going on.

I consulted a California based cult watching organization regarding the church and they had said they were well aware of the ministry I spoke of and had been watching it. This was at least 17 years ago.

A couple of columns ago, I wrote about the Bible and the fact that it's full of things that would probably surprise the average reader. For example, while eating ham or lobster is an abomination, a dish of locusts is just fine.

Thank you, I think I'll pass. The good book also says that a bat is a bird. Sorry to say, this will not go over well in a biology class. The same applies to the idea that ideas happen in the heart. This is in Deuteronomy, Judges, Chronicles and half a dozen other places. As it happens, the brain is never mentioned. And you don't want to know what David paid King Saul for his first wife.

I've been involved with. This group too. I found it and left it 3 yrs ago but they won't leave me alone. It's like they can't accept that they were just too weird for me. They harassed me at work and eventually fired me from that job unjustly and with no reason.

A key factor of mind control is the classic one man scenario. One man is the leader in a group; he does all the speaking and makes all the decisions. In order to keep his control, he makes the group dependent on himself for the basic necessities of life: food, clothing, and shelter. Also, he establishes a group think mentality that totally eliminates individuality.

Through the use of force and/or persuasive speaking, he influences the group to administer his ideologies on potential dissident members. I live alone from my family. I have much that I want to say to them but I cant. Sometimes I think I should just confront them. Tell them exactly how it has been for me. But I cant handle the rejection they will give me. I began to try once. As soon as I talked about addiction to religion and cult� I was vehemently told I was wrong.

That from my mother still very much in the cult. I told my father who still calls himself a cristo even though he isn�t in fellowship. I told him the trouble I had operating socially because of my upbringing. He told me I was wrong because he had plenty of friends outside of the �truth�.

On his way home from work one day in October 2007, Alexandria resident Andrew Myers entered the Dahn Yoga Center on King Street to learn more about the martial arts video showing on the storefront TV.

On October 13, eager to find a new hobby and rid himself of the pain lingering from an old baseball injury, the 1998 T.C. Williams graduate paid $1,290 for a year�s membership.

Before that year was over, though, Myers had quit his job as a city appraiser, went thousands of dollars into debt and apparently needed an intervention to extricate himself of Dahn Yoga, which his family � and others in cases around the country � had come to see as a cult.

Collective veneration or worship (e.g., the cult of the saints � meaning collective veneration of the saints � in Roman Catholicism). In the West, the term has come to be used for groups that are perceived to have deviated from normative religions in belief and practice.

They typically have a charismatic leader and attract followers who are in some way disenfranchised from the mainstream of society. Cults as thus defined are often viewed as foreign or dangerous.

Leaving a cult-

Generally, the attitude exists that if anyone has concerns or uneasy feelings about spiritually abusive activities, they are accused of not being in submission to authority and could even suffer from extreme character assassination (both privately and publicly) in order to diminish the effect of any desire of clarification that could liberate themselves and/or others from a spiritually abusive person/situation.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 19 - The National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) has called for strict laws and regulations to be put in place to vet churches.

Deputy General Secretary Oliver Kisaka said on Friday that the rise in cult- like practices in churches could be attributed to weak guidelines.

WHEN Gov. Liyel Imoke of Cross River State summoned an unusual courage to expel cultists from his administration last year, nobody, including his close political associates, took him serious. The governor immediately became a laughing stock with many referring to him as a time waster.

To them, Imoke was daring the tiger and was at a risk of being consumed. It was their belief that cultism was so entrenched in the state that nobody could dare question it.

I am a survivor of intelligence cults that operate across Canada and are connected internationally. In 1959, I was born into an inter-generational CIA-connected cult that continues to operate in central Ontario.

I was first subjected to calculated torture sessions in the womb, and have been able to integrate fetal selves as an adult. I was an experienced dissociater at birth, an accomplished prostitute before kindergarten, and was being circulated on an elite international circuit by grade school. My programming involved fragmentation into alters who were trained as sex agents, couriers, computers, and cult alters (priestess, seeker, caller, whore, slave, trainer, etc.)

Some of my alters were trained to handle weapons. The stories of Kathleen Sullivan, Brice Taylor, Cisco Wheeler, and Claudia Mullen, as well as Cathy O'Brien's TranceFormation of America describe much that is familiar to me, including near-death centers and 'hunting.' The government of Cross River State, a few days ago, took another step forward in the battle against cultism in the state. Governor Liyel Imoke ordered an extension of the suspension order slammed on ten councillors of the Calabar South Local Government allegedly implicated in violent clashes in the council area in September.

Speaking on behalf of the state government last week, the state information commissioner, Edet Asim, announced that new evidence has confirmed that the councillors were indeed members of the Buccaneer and Vikings cult groups, hence the need for the extended suspension. The councillors have since been arrested and are currently being held at the Afokang prison.

I, too, had grown so desperate in my struggle with trying to accept the ugly situation as "god's plan", that I decided to choose "spiritual death" over staying in that hellhole. At least that's what I thought I was choosing at the time, according to their doctrine.

You know, it should send a MAJOR message to the remaining members that if a person who was sincerely trying to seek and do the will of god would conscientiously choose spiritual death over staying at the church, well. . .what does that say about the condition of its members?

I don't know how the doctrine was at your old church, but we were taught that the ONLY people going to heaven were at GAC -- and that was only if you were PERFECT. If you left the church, you gave up your right to go to heaven and you left god's covering.

I've never understood the allure of religious cults, and the first episode of the Gibson Group two-part series How To Spot a Cult, which started on TV3 last night, hasn't added any attraction. More the opposite: avoid like the plague.

On the evidence presented, cults are led by a dominant person, always men, with banal names like Bert (Potter, the convicted child abuser from Centrepoint), Doug (Metcalf, the man who founded the heavily armed Camp David near Christchurch in the 70s) and Bruce (Hale, world leader of the Brethrens). Lafayette Ron Hubbard reduced his first name to a letter, a fitting metaphor for his repressive Scientology cult.

Recently one of our northwest Seventh-day Adventist pastors went through a very difficult experience. He was encouraged by several friends to attend a weekend in Portland called �Foundations.� He paid the fee and attended but had such serious reservations about some of the process that he left early.

I know a few people who have been involved in cults, usually religious ones, and they talk about how quickly one can get sucked into it.

Until the past few days, though, I really hadn't personally witnessed or experienced cult manipulation or recruitment techniques. Yet now that I have, I find that in good conscience, I must ask all my readers of good will and who aspire to holiness to heed the warning of Bishop Lennon who issued the Decree advising of the non-supernatural status of "Holy Love Ministries." Not just because the Bishop said so, but because I see very strong evidence that HLM, if it can't be considered to be a cult yet, is quickly headed in that direction. The warning signs are DEFINITELY present.
