Sex allegations shock Kerala Church

Kerala Church has been rocked by the release of a controversial book which accuses its clergy of a range of misdemeanours and abuses. An official has responded by describing the book as “an all-out attempt to malign the Church.”

Here Is The Heart Of The Priest, the autobiography of Shibu Kalaparamban, a former member of the Vincentian congregation, was officially launched on Sep. 2.

It alleges that Catholic priests and nuns have broken the vows of chastity and engaged in sexual sins including homosexuality, child abuse and illicit relations. The author narrates confessions he has heard, to substantiate his allegations.

Kalaparamban, who was a priest for 13 years, told ucanews.com that “homosexuality and blue films have become part of religious life.”

Father Paul Thelakat, spokesperson for the Syro-Malabar Church said he has “read the book and feel very sorry about what is written. It is unfortunate.” He went on to say that the book “finds only perversions in the Church.”

Father Thelakat also alleges that the Papal seminary in Pune, where the former priest was trained, advised his superiors not to ordain him but they did so out of compassion.

“It is a pity he was a priest throughout these years and he has heard confessions and given spiritual guidance. He has simply betrayed the trust of the faithful, divulging even confessional secrets to the public,” Father Thelakat said.

Kalapramban, who now lives in Qatar and was suspended when he left Kerala without permission, claimed that he wrote the book only after “detailed thought and discussions.”

A similar controversy broke out in Kerala in 2009, when the autobiography of former nun Jesme alleged a prevalence of sexual abuse and lesbianism in Catholic convents.

Priest impregnated US teenager

A Pennsylvania couple secretly videotaped a Catholic priest having sex with their 18-year-old daughter in the basement of their home and are now suing, saying he got her pregnant.

The lawsuit, filed on Thursday, alleges that the Reverend Luis A Bonilla Margarito carried on a sexual relationship with the teen while he was the chaplain of Reading Central Catholic High School and she was a senior there.

The girl's parents became suspicious and installed a camera in their basement, where Bonilla and the teen were spending large amounts of time. The camera recorded the couple having sex in November 2009, after she had graduated, according to the suit.

Her parents took the video to the Diocese of Allentown, which removed Bonilla from his dual posts as chaplain and pastor of St Joseph Church in Reading after he acknowledged an "inappropriate relationship" with the teen, according to a diocesan news release.

Bonilla was sent to a treatment facility, but "continued to have intimate contact with (the teen) during this time period and ultimately impregnated her", the suit said. She recently gave birth to a girl.

Bonilla, 41, has since left the treatment facility and now lives in Norristown. He could not immediately be reached for comment.

"He has no assignment and he has not functioned as a priest since November," diocesan spokesman Matt Kerr said on Friday.

The lawsuit seeks punitive damages for breach of fiduciary duty, infliction of emotional distress and gross negligence. It names as defendants Bonilla, the diocese, the high school, Allentown Bishop John O Barres, and former Bishop Edward Cullen.
The suit was first reported by the Reading Eagle newspaper.

More child abuse allegations against Catholic school

A prestigious Roman Catholic school already facing an inquiry into its child protection policies has been rocked by renewed child abuse investigations, it has emerged.

Police are investigating allegations against staff made by two former pupils at St Benedict's School in west London.

One of the two arrested was 68-year-old former headmaster Father David Pearce. He is currently serving five years in prison after admitting 10 indecent assaults and one sexual assault on five boys between 1972 and 2007.

The monk retired in 1993 but continued to live in the adjacent abbey, enabling him to abuse one further victim despite being on restricted duties because he had lost a civil case brought by another victim.

A 71-year-old man is also on bail and an 80-year-old man is being investigated but has not been arrested.

The pupils came forward after reading an article about Father Pearce in the Times newspaper.

Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests president Barbara Blaine commended them for going to the police.

"It's tempting, but dangerous, for victims to contact church officials, and much better to contact secular officials," she said.

"It's hard for any abuse victim to speak up, but especially hard for those victimised in a Catholic school setting, in which many fear their confidentiality might be compromised."

Liberal Democrat Peer Lord Carlile QC, the government's adviser on counter-terrorism law, will head a child abuse inquiry at the school.

It will scrutinise an independent schools inspectorate report that noted six sets of allegations against former staff at St Benedict's. The report criticised continued shortcomings in school policy, including monks being allowed to remain living in the abbey while facing allegations.

Records show that two years later, McCabe was removed from St. Bernard Parish in Eureka after parents complained of the priest's inappropriate behavior with children.

McCabe, 74, is now in jail in Alameda County, facing extradition to Ireland where he would face charges of sexually assaulting six boys between 1973 and 1981.

The full story of McCabe was not known until recently, when, as Staff Writer Guy Kovner has reported, detailed reports by the Dublin Archdiocese were released. The reports show that former Dublin Archbishop Dermot Ryan as well as former Santa Rosa Bishop Mark Hurley arranged for McCabe's transfer here in 1983.

Hurley, who died in 2001, has already been at the center of controversy for his handling of abusive priests. In an 1995 legal deposition, he admitted shielding abusive priests from prosecution.

And why St. Bernard parish? That parish it appears received far more than its share of attention from abusive priests. At various times, at least three other priests involved in the North Coast diocese's sexual abuse scandal were based there.

The North Coast has now been living with this horrific truth for 15 years. Each time, the outrage is targeted at abusive priests as well as those in positions of authority who not only did little to hold them accountable but left more children vulnerable.

There are still children here, even though they may now be in adult clothing. The church needs to seek out any victims of abuse who may be out there, particularly in areas where McCabe served.

Priest’s duties limited during inquiry

CEBU Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal has ordered limits on the duties of the diocesan priest accused of misconduct towards female students of a Catholic school.

Cardinal Vidal told reporters last night the priest temporarily cannot hear confession, although he can still administer the other sacraments, like saying Mass and officiating marriages.

The priest, who had asked not to be named, was accused of touching the bra straps of students and attempting to kiss them during confession.

However, he said that when he heard confession last July 20, during a retreat, he made sure everybody could see what was happening by leaving the door of the confession room open.

Cardinal Vidal, 79, said the temporary limit is, so far, his only official directive for the priest. The protocol for misbehaving priests, recently issued by the Holy See, served as basis.

“I have to wait for the result of the canonical investigation,” the archbishop said. “They are still investigating formally. I cannot say anything about that.”

The prelate earlier convened a three-man investigating team, which included canon lawyer Fr. Raul Go, to verify the students’ allegations.

The priest has said the students misinterpreted his actions. He said he only tapped them on the shoulder and whispered his advice during confession. (BAP)

Nun abuse at hell's orphanage

Although I'm a staunch, orthodox Catholic, I still consider myself an advocate for clergy/religious abuse survivors, for which I make no apologies.

I was able to attend the opening session of the 2010 Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests (SNAP) conference. It was a somber experience, and it made me realize how difficult it would be if I had ever been abused by a priest or nun — and no, I'm not talking about getting hit on the wrist with a ruler — to remain a practicing Catholic.

I love the Church and will, with God's grace, remain faithful to her teachings until the day I die. But I do have great sympathy for the survivors, even if they've abandoned the Church as a result of what they experienced. (Of course, I don't have sympathy for those who bash the Church simply because they want to continue living an immoral lifestyle, be it heterosexual or homosexual.)

We've read, and heard, a lot about clergy abuse in recent times, but not so much about abuse by religious. Yet such abuse has happened to a number of people over the last several decades, and it shouldn't be overlooked.

Below is the full legal complaint against the Diocese of Sioux Falls, the Tekakwitha Orphanage for Native Americans, the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, and the Sisters of the Divine Savior. In the lawsuit — you can read a recent newspaper story about it here — several religious, in addition to the priests, are accused of sexual, physical and mental abuse against the plaintiffs. The allegations are sickening, and, due to the frank descriptions of the alleged abuse, reader discretion is advised.

Pray for those who have suffered physical, sexual or mental abuse during the course of their lives.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Yarmouth and the archbishop of the Archdiocese of Halifax have filed a statement of defence in a case involving a woman from Halifax who alleges she endured nearly a decade of sexual assaults by a priest.
In December, Linda Deschamp filed a lawsuit in Nova Scotia Supreme Court that alleges the abuse began after Rev. Raoul Deveau offered her a job cleaning the rectory in Shelburne when she was 11 years old.

Deschamp alleges in a statement of claim that when she went to the rectory she was repeatedly sexually assaulted by the priest, who died in the early 1980s.
John McKiggan, Deschamp’s lawyer, has said the now middle-aged woman moved in with the priest to help her impoverished, devout parents and was instructed to call him uncle.

Deschamp’s suit and the statement of defence contain information and allegations that have not been proven in court.

The statement of defence for the diocese and Halifax Archbishop Anthony Mancini, filed July 27, says they admit to none of the allegations made in Deschamp’s claim.
However, the church and Mancini also say they neither admit nor deny certain allegations, saying they have insufficient knowledge about some of them.
Among these allegations is Deschamp’s claim she was hired to clean the rectory or that she was repeatedly sexually assaulted there by Deveau.

The church and Mancini also say they neither admit nor deny that Deveau sexually assaulted Deschamp during several vacations, and that the local bishop had failed to act on complaints about the priest’s conduct during the 10 years Deveau and Deschamp lived together.

However, the church specifically denies Deschamp’s statement that the bishop presiding over Deveau’s parishes relocated the priest after receiving complaints about his alleged misconduct involving another female child.
The statement of defence also says Mancini is not a proper defendant in the matter because Deschamp’s claim does not disclose a cause of action against him.
The diocese claims it did not employ Deveau, saying the relationship was ecclesiastical in nature.

As well, the defence statement says that even if Deveau was employed by the church, the actions alleged in Deschamp’s claim were "independent acts" that did not occur within the scope of his employment.

As a result, the diocese is not liable for Deveau’s actions, the defence statement says.

"The Diocese of Yarmouth states that it did not know, nor ought to have known, that Deveau presented a danger to the plaintiff . . . and at all times took all reasonable steps regarding training and supervision of Deveau," the defence statement says.
The statement of defence also says Deschamp’s action was filed too late under the terms of the Limitations of Actions Act.

The church accepts an altar boy's complaint about Fr Ray Whitehouse

After action by Broken Rites Australia, the Melbourne Catholic archdiocese has accepted a complaint from a former altar boy ("Stephen") who served under Father Raymond Whitehouse at St Peter's parish, Bentleigh East (in Melbourne's south-east) in 1974.

The complaint was that Whitehouse sexually assaulted Stephen (then aged eleven) after the late-morning Mass on several Sundays. The sexual assaults occurred in the sacristy — the room (not far from the altar) where vestments and sacred vessels were stored.

Whitehouse allegedly intimidated the boy into remaining silent about the sexual abuse. And the boy's strict parents were "loyal" Catholics who did not want to hear any negative story (or "lies", as they called it) about a priest. So the boy remained silent and (he says) became a grumpy teenager. This disrupted his relationship with his parents, making him the "black sheep" of the family and alienating him from all authority. Subsequently, he had many behavioural and relationship problems, extending into his adult years.

Broken Rites research
Raymond William Whitehouse was born about 1945. He was ordained a priest for the Melbourne archdiocese on 19 May 1973. He served as assistant priest in parishes at: East Bentleigh (in the mid-1970s); Essendon (late 1970s and early '80s); Dandenong, Bennettswood and Deepdene (1980s); and as Parish Priest in charge at Lilydale from January 1989 until his early retirement in February 1998, aged 53.

Fr Ray Whitehouse was a friend of three other priests in Victoria — Fr Graham Redfern, Fr Raymond Deal and Fr John Leslie Treacy — each of whom became the subject of a complaint from a young male.
